Below are some policies/procedures that will be in place this school year:

1.                  With regard to tests and assignments missed due to absences, the following will be in effect:

-         If a student is absent on the day of a test, quiz, or when an assignment is due, he will be required to take the test/quiz or turn in the assignment on the day he returns to school.

-         If a student misses the review for a test, he will be required to take the test with the rest of the class on the day it is scheduled.

-         If several days are missed, and as such, the student has missed some instructional materials, I will work with the student to schedule a make up time for the test or quiz.  Please be advised, however, that this does not pertain to long-range assignments, such as essays.

2.                If a student is absent, he is responsible for obtaining the Missed Assignments sheet in his classroom mailbox.  The student will also be responsible for obtaining any notes missed during the time of absence.  I will be available to assist with any materials that are unclear to the student and for which a student expresses a need for help.  However, it will be scheduled by me during a resource time, such as P.E., etc.

3.                Reading tests will often be on Friday; however, that schedule may change due to the length of a particular selection.  Regarding the assessment of novel units, students will be advised in advance of quizzes and tests.  The dates will be posted on the homework board.

4.                Students will have at least one week’s notice for chapter tests and unit tests.  Quizzes will be given intermittently, as needed, in all content areas.

5.                 Long-term projects are due on or before the due date that is given to the students.  The date is also posted on the homework board, along with other assignments and test dates.  For any long-term project that is late, there will be a 10% reduction in the student’s grade for each day that the final copy is late.  * This does not apply to chapter packets, map skills, or Jr. Scholastic, as chapter packets coincide with sections of the chapter that are covered in class.  Class time is also given throughout the week(s) for work in these areas.  (Please see #7 below.)

6.                Use of a student planner is strongly recommendedOrganizational skills are of the utmost importance, so as to ensure productivity and responsibility.

7.                 For each of the content areas I teach, the students will have opportunities for grades, in addition to tests and quizzes, as follows.  These opportunities can aide a student, but please be advised that they, too, are graded and due dates and guidelines must be observed in their completion. If a student chooses not to complete a homework or classwork assignment, a zero will be recorded.

Reading           -        Students will be required to complete questions and quizzes which accompany the Junior Scholastic news magazine.  These will account for a homework grade at the end of the six weeks.

Social Studies -        Students will be required to present a current event weekly.  Additional information about current events requirements has been given to each student.

8.                I will be distributing graded work to the students as soon as I have assessed them.  All assessments receiving a “C” or below, must be signed by a parent or guardian.  Students have the opportunity to file any assessment receiving an “A” or a “B”.  Parents or guardians, of course, may view the file in the classroom upon request.  Those papers which require a signature should be returned in a timely manner.  Recess/lunch detentions and/or phone calls home may result from signed papers not being returned.

9.                In order to achieve a harmonious learning environment that is beneficial to all, any student who is disruptive (either in the classroom or in a resource) will be sent to the office with a written assignment that is to be completed and returned.  This  assignment will be reviewed by the issuing teacher for grammar, neatness, etc.  A parent or guardian’s signature may also be required.
